Drag racing is when to cars side by, side, race from a standing
start in a straight line, usually for a distance if a quarter mile..
The fastest reach speeds of over 300 mph (about 480 kph), and
can cover a quarter mile from a standing stop, in 4.5 seconds..

Drift racing is done by front, or rear drive sports cars, and sport
sedans.. It's done on courses that can be in a stadium, or a large
parking lot.. The course is marked using pylons (rubber cones), or
other soft objects, and the cars run two at a time, racing each other
through the turn.. They throw the cars into the turns in a manor that
causes them to slide, often side, by side, as in a ballet, while racing..
The drivers are trying to beat each other to the finish, but they are
also judged on the style of the sidewards DRIFTS while turning, with deductions for hitting obstacles..

Please pardon the rudeness of some of these folks.. They they think
it's a prerequisite for being an F1 fan.. But I can assure you, that people like that are not representative of any real race fan..
References :
.

Nothing. They're both ridiculous...

Drag racing is reacting quickly to lights, known as a christmas tree, moving off and trying to go as fast as possible down a quarter mile of straight road.

Drifting is going around a track with the back end of the car hanging out in a controlled slide, known as oversteer, trying to get as acute an angle as possible without spinning.

So, the biggest difference is....Drag racing = straight line
Drifting = not in a straight line
Both = ridiculous

EDIT: Please pardon the pompous self-righteousness of our "true race fan representative" - I don't recall voting for him to "represent" me in any way shape or form thank God....

Just because I choose to say what I feel on a particular topic does not alienate me at all. I also find tractor pulling and monster truck racing equally ridiculous!

I find other forms of motorsport enthralling, but I do so because I have a choice......It's people like you that would prefer to see me housebound in a burka ( I'd still sneak out with the car keys though!!!) .

drifting is where you drive a course sliding around corners to get scored

Drag racing is just a straight strip to get to the t]end the quickest
References :
drag racing is commonly between two cars side by side running up to a mile stretch of road

whereas

drift racing is when you have one car behind another. the front car is hitting the wind whereas the car behind the front car isn't dealing with wind resistance. this can give better gas mileage and when the opportunity presents itself you can use the drifting and pass the car in front of you, however you become the one to hit the wind resistance
