What is the best way to get into drag racing?

I want to try to get a very good foothold in this sport and was wondering what is the best way to do it. Should I buy a fully built car or should I build one myself. I have about $15,000.00. what class should i shoot for and how would I do. I have no experience in this sport but really wish to get into it and do it right so any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your interest and time,

Greg P.

Put most of your money away. Find a solid older V8 car (Mustang or Firebird etc.) Get a helmet and start bracket racing. As you gain experience and get to know the other competitors, you will figure out the best class for you and then you can move in that direction.

Buying a set up car is expensive and if you plan on using the engine in it you probly wont know the erks and perks of it.

Id say buy a car thats in good condition put a cage in it and then enhance the engine.

Youd be good to start in somehing like a street series. Super Sedan… Something like that.

If youve never been around the sport. This is a good way to work out if you want to stay in it.

Its alot different on TV to when your there.

    Good luck

Start spending all your spare time at the drag strip. Find a class to race in that appeals to you. Sooner or later you’ll find a car for sale that is already set up and ready to race. Buying a car already built is usually much cheaper than building it yourself and trying to work the bugs out. Let someone else sort out the car for you. If you’re dead set on being a full time drag racer, you will need a pick up truck of some kind and a car hauler, if you don’t already have them. Figure that into your expenses.

Depending on where your at you local track will hold a street legal night and run your daily driver. You know this car, you need as much behind the wheel time as you can get. I races my vw bug in high school. after a few nights of this you can run during their normal points race in the street class all you need is street legal tires for this class no helmet needed unless your run faster then 12.99 seconds. learn how to react of the line, better reacting times lets you play the game at the finish line better. You do not need a fast car to win just a consistent one.

start out small and build your skill up before you go spending on your money and finding out that its not your thing, or that you dont like it. same for any type of racing. make sure to buy good safety gear cause you can always buy a new car, but you cant buy a new you.
