Is drag racing dangerous if you have all the right safety equipment?

My boyfriend used to drag race and said he might do it again if he had the time and money. He said he would only do it at the drag strip where there are no other cars or cross streets, and would use all the safety equipment. He says it is safer than flying in an airplane, which I occasionally do when I go out of state. What is your opinion on this? Is it safe or dangerous?

I’ve been drag racing for more than 40 years.
I’m yet to ever get a scratch from it.
Use the safety equipment the way it’s supposed to be used and BACK OUT OF IT if something starts to go wrong.
I think driving on a public roadway is much more unsafe……..

It’s dangerous…tires blow out…engines blow up..parts fail…Not safer than an airplane. But your boyfriend probably gets a rush from it. I’d let him do it. You can get killed walking down the street these days.

Regardless of whether you have equipment, good equipment, or plain below-average equipment, drag-racing always has its dangers. To answer this question, it’s the latter. Even if he has good skills on-the-road, there’s always the possibility of a crash, for one. I mean, some claim driving to be fool-proof, what-with all the past auto-accidents.

If someone has to wear safety equipment in order to do or perform anything it is because it’s dangerous indeed no matter what.He isn’t making it less dangerous,He is just reducing His risks.

If you have good equipment, good tires, and don’t try to go 200 mph, it can be a safe sport.
I used to drag too, and the Palmdale raceway, Ca, for over 10 years, and i never saw a crash.
I ran a ’68 Pontiac 400 Firebird, low 12 seconds, and it is a kick.

In the off season, we used to get some of the pros out too, tuning their cars, because not many tracks are open 12 months out of the year.
Because we were there racing, we were right down on the track, watch those 200-330+ racers going full out.

    even a few jet dragsters,
a tank, a school bus, a "Semi cab" lol

    Any motorsport is dangerous.

Even Formula 1, which is what this section is for!

Dangerous. One can still be killed by the sheer force of a crash..or burned to death. It is safer, and still is getting even more safe…but racing is racing,

Yeah, I’d have to think that drag racing is safer than flying an airplane. Much depends on how fast the car goes. A Top Fuel dragster is a bit more dangerous at 300 mph than a Sportsman car doing 150. Attend an NHRA or IHRA event and you’ll see how safe it is. There is a bigger element of danger driving down the interstate. I’ve seen 70 year old women drag racing, so maybe that counts for something.

It’s probably one of the most dangerous motorsports on the planet. Even with the high tech safety these days.. 300+mph & one tyre blow-out could be the end. It has for others many times over.

I’ll put it to you straight….. Drag racing is very very dangerous.

It is very safe because there are a lot of safety precautions and rules. But all motorsports are dangerous. But in the end, a car is a machine and accidents happen. Even the best driver can experience a part failing on the car which causes an crash.

It is dangerous. Statistically drag racing is far more dangerous than flying. You can mitigate the risks however if you use the correct safety equipment and are intelligent in how you approach the sport. But always remember that if you are racing, regardless of the type of racing, there is danger involved.
